AFTERSCHOOL DISCIPLESHIP FORMATION

The Afterschool Discipleship formation program (formerly Religious Education) will now have two campus locations to serve our family of Parishes: St. Frances Cabrini in Allen Park and St. Andre Bessette in Ecorse.

Discipleship Formation provides catechesis to children, helping them through the process of spiritual formation, education of the Catholic faith, and on-going conversion as they grow closer to Christ through the sacraments. Our trained dedicated catechists teach the faith of the Catholic Church by both word and example.

Our program is designed for children to participate beginning in 1st grade and continue attending each year through 8th grade. Each year of formation helps your child gain a deeper understanding of the faith and prepares their hearts to receive the sacraments of the Catholic Church. Our mission is to help inspire a new generation of disciples in Christ. We strive to help our children establish a firm faith foundation so they may continue to grow in holiness, through prayer, charity and the sharing of our faith.

Our program begins in 1st grade and continues through confirmation 8th grade

New registrations will begin on June 30, 2025.
Deadline: August 31, 2025

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

Baptism Preparation | The Baptism Preparation program reminds parents and parents-to-be of the beauty, importance, and dignity of the Sacrament of Baptism, which bestows the grace and blessings of God on His most precious gifts – babies.

During the bustle and excitement awaiting a baby’s arrival, parents need quiet time to reflect on receiving their new baby as a child of God and prepare for the child’s journey in the Catholic faith.

Parishioners who participate in Baptism Preparation are asked to recommit themselves to embracing the faith and passing it on to the newest members of the Church.

First Communion & First Reconciliation Preparation
Children may prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation and First Communion, if they have completed the first grade in an approved catechesis program.  Students begin Communion Preparation in 1st grade or in their first year in the program. The 2nd year of sacramental preparation is supplemental and children, with encouragement and help from their family, are required to participate in the following:

  • Regularly attend and participate in Sunday Mass and Holy Days of Obligation
  • Actively participate in Religious Education program or attend a Catholic School
  • Attend First Communion retreat with their parents

Confirmation
The sacrament of Confirmation is a 2-year preparation process where the child attends preparation class twice a month from September through May. Children begin Confirmation Preparation in 7th and complete their second year of preparation in 8th grade. The Sacrament of Confirmation is traditionally celebrated when the child is 13 or 14 years old (8th grade school year). Students preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation are required to have actively participated in a catechesis program or attend a Catholic School. They are also required to:

  • Regularly attend and participate in Sunday Mass and Holy Days of Obligation
  • Register and attend Confirmation Sacramental Prep classes and retreats

Order of Christian Initiation for Teens (OCIT)
OCIT classes are designed to educate youth in the Catholic faith and prepare them for the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation.  Whether your family is just entering the Church, returning to the faith, or just chose to delay your child’s sacramental preparation, all youth baptized or not, are welcome.

This group is for any youth 13-17 years of age who desire to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church through the sacraments but has not regularly attended any catechesis through a parish or catholic school. It is a 2-year process, in which the youth meet twice a month on the third Tuesday and First Saturday. It begins in October and ends in May. Only one OCIT group is offered for our entire Family of Parishes and will be held at the St. Andre Bessette Campus in Ecorse. This formation also includes:

  • Regular attendance of preparation classes and retreats
  • Regular attendance and participation in Sunday Mass and Holy Days

Marriage | Writing invitations, choosing a dress, hiring a photographer – there are so many things for an engaged couple to do that its easy for them to lose sight of the fact that they’re not just preparing for a wedding, they’re preparing for marriage. To start the process of planning your wedding call St. Frances Cabrini Parish Office at (313) 381-5601.

Parent Meetings for Sacraments | These meetings give us an opportunity to focus on the meaning and power of these sacraments. At least one parent must attend these meetings. Parental involvement is further encouraged through a variety of activities, which are described at the meetings. Regular attendance at Mass is a concrete way of our living out our commitment to worship with our parish faith community. Therefore, regular attendance at Mass, as well as Afterschool Discipleship Formation classes, is a vital necessity for the children who are being led to fuller participation in the Church life, especially through the reception of First Communion.

It is the policy of St. Frances Cabrini that children preparing to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation need to be in their second year of formal religious education (i.e., having been enrolled 1st as well as 2nd grade and having been in 7th as well as 8th grade.) Children who are not baptized need to be enrolled in OCIA, and children who are baptized, but have had no prior religious education are enrolled in Sacramental Preparation after one year in the Afterschool Discipleship Formation Program.

All children must have celebrated the sacrament of Baptism prior to celebrating First Eucharist. The child’s baptismal certificate must be on file if the child was not baptized at St. Frances Cabrini.

BECOMING CATHOLIC

OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults)

Are you interested in learning more about the Catholic faith? Have you been away from the Church and have questions? Where do you begin to find answers? Well, you just begin from where you are now!

The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) is the process by which any unbaptized persons or baptized Christian/Catholic begins to learn more about the faith through participation in Catholic faith formation. This formation typically requires several months to complete; taking into consideration each person’s unique circumstances. Formation includes the following periods of learning and discernment:

Period of Evangelization and Pre-Catechumenate

This is the time when an individual comes to some knowledge of Jesus Christ, considers his or her relationship with Jesus Christ and is usually attracted to the Catholic Church.

Period of the Catechumenate

The Catechumen consider what God is saying to them in the Scriptures, what changes in their life they need to make to respond to God’s inspiration, and what Baptism in the Catholic Church means.

Period of Purification and Enlightenment

This is the time immediately preceding the elects’ initiation; it is a time of reflection, intensely centered on conversion.

Period of Mystagogy

During this period the newly baptized and confirmed reflect on their experiences at the Easter Vigil and continue to learn about the Scriptures, the Sacraments, and the teachings of the Catholic Church. This is also the time when they reflect on how they will serve Christ and help in the Church’s mission and outreach activities within their home parish and the world.

God has called you and you have responded to Him by taking the next step in your faith journey, participating in OCIA. During this time of formation, you will participate in Mass, prayer and lectures with the guidance of the OCIA team and guest speakers. Weekly formation is hosted at both your home parish and St. Frances Cabrini.

Each Catechumenate/Candidate will attend Sunday Mass and a time of prayer at their home parish: plan on approximately 1 ½ hours of formation on Sunday.

On Wednesday evenings, faith formation class is held in the Holy Family Hall from 6:30 – 8:00pm. The address is 15310 Wick Road, Allen Park, MI 48101; the entrance is in the back of the building.

The priests, deacons, OCIA team and Family of Parishes community is committed and excited to support you on your faith journey.

HOLY ORDERS

Holy Orders | Those with a passion for serving others may hear God’s call to turn to the diocesan priesthood and consecrated life to fulfill their life’s mission.

Religious vocations include the diocesan priesthood and permanent diaconate, religious order priests, consecrated life, and other religious formations. Each person takes his or her own path in vocations, which could lead to celebrating the Gospel, teaching children, or serving the poor and sick.

If interested, please call the parish office at (313) 381-5601 or the Archdiocesan Office of Vocations at (313) 868-7040 or by visiting www.aod.org/vocations.

FUNERALS

Funerals And End of Life | The Church asks for spiritual assistance for the departed, honors their bodies, and at the same time brings solace of hope to the living. The celebration of the Christian funeral brings hope and consolation to the living. While proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and witnessing to the Christian hope in the resurrection, the funeral rites also recall to all who take part in them God’s mercy and judgement, and meet the human need to turn always to God in times of crisis.
